Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Teresa Bennett Merrell, 56, passed away on September 16, 2026, surrounded by her family, following complications from ovarian cancer.
Teresa was born on December 31, 1969, in Saint Louis, Missouri, to Marilyn Gubler Bennett and Jesse Harland Bennett. She spent her early childhood in Silver Spring, Maryland, before moving with her family to North Logan, Utah, at age 13. She attended Sky View High School and later moved to Provo, where she attended Brigham Young University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management. It was at BYU that she met her sweetheart, Loren James Merrell. They were married in the Logan Utah Temple on May 20, 1989.
Teresa and Loren built their first home together in Gilbert, Arizona, before eventually returning to her childhood home in North Logan while Loren pursued his dream of becoming a commercial pilot. In 2002, their lives changed forever when Loren died unexpectedly in a plane crash when she was just 32 years old, leaving Teresa to raise their four children on her own.
Teresa devoted the rest of her life to her children. She was a fierce defender, unwavering supporter, and constant source of love and strength to her children, Keilani, Brock, Cody, and Jared. She supported their interests and hobbies throughout their lives and would do anything she could to help them succeed. Her children were her greatest joy and her proudest accomplishment.
Teresa later returned to school at Utah State University, earning a master’s degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling. She went on to work as a Development Counselor for Family Services for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she continued her lifelong commitment to helping and serving others.
Teresa’s faith was at the center of her life. As a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she held numerous leadership callings and dedicated herself to becoming more like Jesus Christ. Through some of life’s most difficult trials, she placed her faith in the Savior and continued to serve those around her. Her testimony, resilience, and Christlike love were an example to countless people.
Teresa was also known for her quick wit, sarcasm, and infectious laughter. She had an incredible ability to make people laugh and was always looking for someone she could help. She gave everything she had to others. And if something needed fixing, Teresa was the person to call. She could fix almost anything, and if she didn’t know how, she would figure it out. She was a true handyman who approached every problem with determination and resourcefulness.
Teresa will be remembered for her fierce love of her family, her unwavering faith, her willingness to serve, her humor, and her determination to overcome every challenge placed in her path. Above all, she will be remembered as a mother who gave everything she had to her children and loved them with her whole heart.
Teresa is survived by her four children: Keilani Brooke Merrell; Brock James Merrell and his wife, Clarisa Elizabeth Woodworth Merrell; Cody Bennett Merrell and his wife, Grace Rael Christensen Merrell; and Jared Hunter Merrell and his wife, Saige Isabel Selman Merrell; and her granddaughter, Ivy Rose Merrell. She is also survived by her brother, Scott Jesse Bennett, and sister, Cheryl Bennett Peck.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Loren James Merrell, and her parents, Marilyn Gubler Bennett and Jesse Harland Bennett.
Teresa’s family is grateful for the many years they were blessed to have her and for the countless lives she touched through her faith, service, humor, and love. Though her family and friends will deeply miss her, they find comfort in the knowledge that she is reunited with Loren and that their family will be together again.
