Alan Lloyd Bird of Smithfield, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, in Ogden, Utah, at the age of 78 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Alan was born on October 8, 1947, in Logan, Utah, to Rolen Lloyd Bird and Alieen Christiansen Bird. He grew up in Logan, the oldest of four children and the only boy. He graduated from Logan High School, and Utah State University where he studied Communications.
On April 2, 1970, Alan married his sweetheart, Alice Ileen Olson Bird, in the Logan Utah Temple. They were married for 56 years and during their time together they lived in Evanston Wyoming, Pocatello Idaho, Richmond Utah and settled in their forever home that they built in Smithfield. They were blessed with four children and built a loving home.
Alan was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served diligently in many callings throughout his life. As a young man, he was active in the scout program and he served a two-and-a-half-year mission in the French East Mission. Although he began his service in the mission home in Switzerland, he spent most of his mission serving in France. He had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and found great joy in serving others, teaching Sunday school, attending and serving in the temple, and sharing the gospel.
Alan enjoyed sports of all kinds. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Utah State Aggies, Utah Jazz, Boston Red Sox, and Seattle Seahawks. He loved skiing, camping, and spending time outdoors with his family. During the summer months, he could often be found tending his garden. Alan was also a talented photographer who loved capturing special moments, especially photographs of his children and grandchildren.
Throughout his professional life, Alan pursued his passions for communication, advertising, and photography. Early in his marriage, he worked as a sports broadcaster in Evanston, Wyoming; Pocatello, Idaho; and Logan, Utah. Although broadcasting was his dream career, he eventually transitioned into advertising and photography to better provide for his family. He owned and operated Peppercorn Productions, where he combined his creative talents in advertising and photography. He was also fortunate to work with Alco Seatcovers, Caspers Ice Cream, Heart to Heart Food, and Doppelmayr/Garaventa CTEC where he was able to photograph ski lifts throughout the region, while getting to ski at the same time. Even in his later years, Alan remained a dedicated worker, serving as an advertising and catalog consultant for Privacy Link up until the time of his passing.
Alan is survived by his devoted wife, Ileen; his four children and their spouses; Alan Richard Bird of Orem, Utah; Angela (Edward) Spotten of Port Orchard, Washington; Amy (Brian) Homer of West Jordan, Utah; and Alan Jeffrey (Kizzi) Bird of Smithfield, Utah with 17 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; his sister, Janis (Scott) Borchert; and his brother-in-law, Gerald Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Alieen Bird; his in-laws, Edsel and Doris Scott; his beloved grandson, Alan Tanner Bird; his sisters, Jeanine Saxton and DeeAnn Smith; and his brother-in-law, Randall Saxton.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026, at 12:00 noon at the Smithfield 22nd Ward Chapel, 179 East 100 North, Smithfield, Utah 84335.
