On the morning of October 15, 2014, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, Van K Haderlie passed away in Logan, UT, surrounded by family. His heart finally gave out. He was born 31 December 1927, in Auburn, Lincoln, Wyoming, in the beautiful Star Valley he loved. He is the son of Oliver Romeo Haderlie and Tressa Elizabeth Kennington - the oldest of seven children, 4 brothers and 3 sisters: Sybil (D Carl Warnock, deceased), Sigurd, UT; Ralph (Shirley Wolfley), Thayne, WY; VaLoy (Vernal Anderson), West Haven, UT; Milton (Elizabeth Bullock, deceased, and Louise Winward), Pocatello, ID; Marilyn (Jack Lundberg, deceased), Midvale, UT; and Brent, deceased.A simple farm boy, he loved farm work, animals, fishing, hunting, music, sports, traveling, his friends and neighbors - but most of all, his family and his church, his God and his Savior. He was always willing to help and to share whatever he had.He graduated from Thayne Elementary (Thayne, WY), Star Valley High School (Afton, WY), Utah State Agricultural College (Logan, UT) – Bachelor of Science in Agronomy, and the University of Montana (Missoula, MT) – Master of Resource Administration.He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (North Central States Mission) and in the Infantry and Army Medical Corps in WWII.Having met in Logan, Utah, while attending Utah State Agricultural College, he later married the love of his life, Bernice Merrill, of Thomas, Bingham, Idaho, in 1952 in the Idaho Falls Temple. To them were born three daughters – Brenda Lynn (Doyle Milton Wright), Orem, UT; Jo Nell (John Stanley Bird), Stockton, MO; and Sheri, Logan, UT; then five sons – Dennis K (Margaret [Peggy] Lee Blackwood), Belgrade, MT; Merrill K (Mae Louise Pledge), Logan, UT; Brad K (Heidi Ann Walls, deceased), Bozeman, MT; Kevan K (Bertha Maria Dominguez-Vazquez), South Salt Lake, UT; and Bryan K (Wendy Suzanne Green), Stafford, VA. There are currently 45 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandchildren.A long career in the US Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service, had him and his family moving to many locations around Montana, with a couple of years in Nevada and Texas; ending with a 2 year assignment in Indonesia. Retiring in Bozeman, Montana, he developed many deep and lasting temporal and eternal relationships with neighbors, friends and family. In 2013, he and Bernice returned to the place their family journey began, Logan, Utah.He served in several positions in the LDS church, including home teacher, Sunday School teacher, scout committee chairman, priesthood quorum president, counselor in a branch presidency, Branch President (twice), counselor in a bishopric (twice), Bishop, Stake Young Men’s President, Stake High Council member, counselor in a Stake Presidency, Stake Patriarch (Bozeman, MT Stake), and Temple Sealer (Billings, MT Temple).Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 21 October, at the Logan 5th Ward church, 305 E 500 N, Logan. Family and friends are invited to attend the viewing prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at the Thayne, WY, cemetery.
